When the first season of “The Mandalorian” was released in 2019, it captivated the world with the famous Baby Yoda. People could not get enough of the Internet sensation for months after they met him. With high expectations going in, season two brings new energy and focus onto Baby Yoda, which is exactly what we want to see. With new characters to add some intrigue, the new season is the best one yet.
The main character of the show remains Mando, played by Pedro Pascal, who returned for his second season. The story revolves around Mando’s quest to return Baby Yoda, who is shown to have the potential to be a Jedi, back to the Jedi Order. On this journey, Mando meets new people and has many adventures in all sorts of different places and environments, like Mon Cala and Ilum, which have been popular in previous Star Wars shows such as “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” Mando encounters trouble with many people, including the Empire, which was thought to be destroyed, and seeks to take Baby Yoda for their own gain. The adventures of the new season rival that of even the best Star Wars films.
Likely the biggest accomplishment of the latest season is that the show brings in many classic characters from the Star Wars Universe, such as Boba Fett, Luke Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano to join and help Mando complete his quest. In the original season, “The Mandalorian” was made up of almost exclusively new characters who had never been seen before, but now the second season gives Star Wars fans new stories about their favorite original characters.
The villain of the show is the same as the first season, Moff Gideon, played by Giancarlo Esposito. Esposito does a wonderful job of conveying to viewers his character’s goal while also acting with the cruelty and evil that a villain should have. Villains typically do not show sympathy or remorse, and Esposito is masterful in his cold and steely approach. Moff Gideon is the perfect antagonist to Mando, who plays the role of a typical heroic protagonist with an intriguing goal.
One of the few flaws of the season is its lack of complexity. The plot is very simple and does not have many twists that one would expect in a show of this caliber. While multiple subplots are introduced, none of them are followed up on at all during the season. This hopefully means there will be spinoff shows revolving around those subplots, such as the story of Boba Fett before “The Mandalorian” and the life of Baby Yoda before and after the show, which Star Wars fans have been anxiously wondering about. Season two is a well written show, but it sometimes fails to introduce new and original content.
While there was a solid resolution to the story, there are still some layers to the plot that have been delayed for future seasons, which is a smart move that gives fans something to look forward to. Additionally, Ahsoka Tano’s brief appearance will segue perfectly into her own new show that will hopefully debut in late 2021, for which the plot was introduced in “The Mandalorian.” Tano was seen fighting her own battle on the planet of Corvus, where she is looking for a villain of the past, Grand Admiral Thrawn. Fans are also hoping that a Boba Fett spinoff show will come to fruition after he made his first appearance since “Star Wars: Attack of the Clones” in 2002.
Season two of “The Mandalorian” is an excellent sequel to the first season and adds very nicely to the ever-expanding Star Wars Universe. Despite some plot holes and inconsistencies, it is a fascinating show that viewers everywhere will love. Its influx of new characters and intriguing storyline make it a must watch for any Star Wars fan.
