While 2020 proved to be a challenging year for everyone, junior Lainey Luper used it as an opportunity to reach one of her personal achievements.
She said that she was able to complete 25 hours of service work in the past year, a number which is a personal best for her throughout her life. A majority of this time was spent volunteering at a special needs carnival for children and adults with her friends through Friendship Circle, a charity for children and young people with special needs, she explained.
“I was asked to volunteer at this carnival with Friendship Circle, and I immediately asked my friends if they wanted to do it with me because it was for an extremely good cause,” Luper said.
Luper said that this was an especially important opportunity for her because she wanted to help people who are at a high risk for COVID-19.
“After completing this achievement, I have been more open-minded and thoughtful to others,” Luper said. “I also have realized how important it is to help and spend time with others who may be different than you.”
There are so many good deeds which people are capable of performing in the world and she was excited to be a part of it, she explained.
“I feel so much more willing to help others after participating in the carnival,” Luper said. “I would love to do something like this again because I know how much it means to the community.”
