Volleyball
As the varsity volleyball season comes to a close and the team begins to prepare for its upcoming tournament, the team holds the rank of third in the state with a record of 20-1.
Senior co-captain Barb Wernicke said that she had not anticipated such a successful season.
“I thought we were going to be good this season, but I never dreamed we would be as good as we are,” Wernicke said.
Junior outside hitter Leiah Groom also said that she was not expecting the team to do so well this season.
“My expectations were exceeded,” Groom said. “We have a good shot at going to states.”
Both Groom and Wernicke agreed that the greatest moments of the season were their triumphs over Newark Catholic.
“Also, when we found out we were first in the state,” Groom added.
Wernicke said that their ability to work together is one of the team’s strengths, although individual players are also crucial.
“Emily (Ochieng) gives us so much stability as center,” Wernicke said.
Groom also acknowledged the role of teamwork in the team’s success this season.
“Without each other, no one would get anywhere,” Groom said. “Teamwork is important in volleyball because every position contributes to the game.”
Field Hockey
Varsity field hockey prepares for tournament after beating an undefeated team and getting a record of 13-1-1 this season.
Junior Anna Grossman, who plays left defense, said that the team’s high morale contributed to their repeated wins.
“Everybody plays for each other rather than [for] themselves,” Grossman said.
Junior Devin Beaumier said that the team’s tough midfield and experienced defense were some of the team’s strengths.
Beaumier said that beating Watterson had exceeded her expectations because Bexley had not beaten Watterson in eight years.
“That was awesome,” Beaumier said.
Beaumier said that the best moment for her this season was during the Watterson game.
“[The best moment was] watching Lauren Zacks score the winning goal in overtime,” Beaumier said.
Grossman also viewed the team’s defeat over Watterson as one of the greatest accomplishments of the season. Grossman said, however, that the absolute greatest moment of the season was when the team was undefeated at the time.
Boys Soccer
Having won the state championship in both 2003 and 2005, the boys soccer team looks for a repeat performance in the 2007 postseason.
“The season started out somewhat slowly,” senior captain Daniel Broidy said. “But the same thing happened in 2005, and that ended up working out fine.”
Broidy, who was on the 2005 state championship team, said that this year’s team is comparable to teams in the past.
“The defense is just as strong, if not stronger than 2005, and the skill level is there, too,” Broidy said.
The team, ranked number two in the state and the district with a record of 12-2-2, will have home field advantage throughout the district tournament, Broidy said.
“The whole team has the common goal of a state championship,” Broidy said. “Nothing else will do.”
Girls Soccer
With seven straight appearances in the state tournament, the girls soccer team is on track for another deep tournament run.
The team finished the regular season 15- 0-1 and has only let in two goals in the process, junior mid-fielder Jocelyn Zadzi said.
The team, though confident, knows the tournament will not be an easy time, Zadzi said.
“The postseason will be difficult, because we will be meeting both Kettering Alter and Hamilton Badin in the regional tournament, and they are really strong teams,” Zadzi said. “I think we can pull through, though.”
The Lions, who are ranked number one in the state, begin their postseason with home field advantage through the district tournament, Zadzi said.
“Come out and watch us play,”Zadzi said. “It’s going to be a great postseason.”
Boys Cross Country
Lately, the boys cross country team has been earning recognition as one of the top teams in the cross country community by finishing in the top few places at each meet, sophomore runner Aaron Hoffman said.
Senior captain Matt Cavallaro and sophomore Cameron Hathaway anchor the varsity team, which consists of seven runners, junior Tim Beck said. When scoring, however, only the top five times are counted out of the seven runners, Beck said.
“The whole team has been improving a lot, and that definitely showed in leagues,” Beck said.
The Lions got first place in the league meet, with each member of the team breaking personal records, Beck said.
“The team has momentum now, and if we keep running like this, we are going to do very well this year,” Beck said.
The postseason began with the district meet on Saturday, Oct. 20 at Watkins Memorial where the Lions placed second, moving them on to the regional meet.
