The Info:
Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, started by Jeni Britton and Charly Bauer in 2002, will open its newest location right here in Bexley next spring.
Famous for its signature and seasonal scoops, Jeni’s first site opened at the North Market in the Short North six years ago.
All of the ice creams are handmade in their Grandview “production kitchen,” and then driven out to each store (or stand, in the case of the North Market).
It will soon be in business at the Bexley Gateway, between Mozart’s and the Rusty Bucket.
The Good:
If you are looking for interesting flavors that you won’t find anywhere else, Jeni’s is the place for you.
Each of the flavors is unique, ranging from exotic to just plain strange.
For example, their “salty caramel” tastes just as weird as it sounds the first time you hear it.
But after the initial shock of such an offthe-wall-taste, it’s a familiar and unforgettable flavor.
Also, the “Belgian chocolate” is exactly the way they describe it: “a chocolate made with the most amount of chocolate and the least amount of anything else.”
Individually, the chocolate and the caramel flavors would just be too much, but in the same cup, it’s a perfect balance.
Neither try to steal the spotlight. Instead, they complement each other in every way.
Finally, the “brownie cheesecake” was the best ice cream I have ever had in my life.
It tasted more like cheesecake than some versions of actual cheesecake I have eaten.
Rich, delectable flavors make this a place everyone should try at least once.
The Bad:
As rich as all of Jeni’s flavors are, they are a little pricey for the risk.
The least expensive choice is $3.00, but that’s where it ends.
You have to be willing to be surprised. The first time sometimes isn’t as pleasant as others because it can feel like a waste of money.
For someone who isn’t quite sure about trying new things, this place is not your niche.
Also, if you are looking for just plain, simple vanilla, you’re not going to find it, so be prepared.
The Rest:
Jeni’s is not plain and simple anything. It feels just as charming and quirky as its signature flavors when you walk right up to the stand.
As a first time taster, I was a little nervous in the beginning.
But I went up and they immediately had suggestions and comments on which flavor I should try first. I immediately had two or three different tasting spoons waving in my direction.
Jeni’s is great ice cream for any mood. You can buy just a scoop or buy a whole pint to take home and enjoy.
It is the perfect remedy for days that need a little spice. The best part is that Jeni’s will be here in Bexley soon, so you won’t have to drive very far for this wonderful treat.
