Boots with the fur: not just a lyric courtesy of Flo Rida, but also a fashion trend, thanks to the Australian-made Ugg boots.
Junior Madelyn Sierer, who owns four pairs, remembers witnessing Ugg’s rise to trend status.
“I first saw girls wearing Uggs when I was in middle school,” Sierer said. “At first, it was a big fashion statement; now everyone wears them.”
Junior Elise Skaggs said she wears Uggs because they are comfortable, durable and stylish.
“I can wear them in the snow so my feet don’t get wet,” Skaggs added.
But sophomore Emily Supowit said that people only wear Uggs because they are popular.
“People say that they wear [Uggs] for comfort,” Supowit said. “But let’s be honest, they don’t wear them because they’re comfortable; they wear them because everyone else has them.”
Sierer said that she dislikes when people say they don’t wear Uggs because they don’t want to “conform.”
“I wouldn’t wear or not wear something just because it’s popular,” Sierer said.
Sierer also said that she wears the boots because they are so warm.
“Plus they’re perfect with any outfit,” Sierer added.
Skaggs said that people wear Uggs for their convenience.
“But, to some degree, I think [they’re popular] because everyone has them.”
Supowit said that the boots will not last.
“Everything goes out of style eventually” Supowit said.
But Skaggs said that the high cost of Uggs will keep them a trend in the future.
“When you invest $150 in something, you’ll probably wear them a long time,” Skaggs said.
