The creators of hits like “Dancing Queen” and “Mamma Mia” have struck again after a 40-year hiatus with their newest album “Voyage,” released Friday, Nov. 5. The album is crafted carefully: its songs flow well throughout the album with strong lyrics and instrumentation, and the songs are similar to those of the ‘70s and ‘80s.
The album is short, with only 10 songs and a running time of 37 minutes. However, the album still offers a variety of songs. While some are slower, others like “Don’t Shut Me Down,” the second of three singles, create an upbeat mood. “No Doubt About It” is one of my favorites because of its great instrumental feel, which distracts from the lyrics describing a broken relationship.
The opening song “I Still Have Faith in You” is another one of my favorites from “Voyage.” The song has a ballad feel that makes it the perfect introduction to ABBA’s newest work. With a slow tempo and short stanzas that tell a story of faith, it gives an optimistic feeling for the rest of the album. Although the song is slower, it offers a positive message with lyrics like “We still have it in us. We’ve only just begun.” Its lyrics, along with its use of instruments like the piano, make it a highlight of the album.
My favorite thing about the album is its timeless feel. The songs sound like they were released when the band was first popular in the 1970s.
The album shows that the classic disco pop music ABBA once created has not gone out of style. While some artists stray from their original sound, ABBA remains true to their first works. “Voyage” is a perfect example of the best way to come back into the music industry.
