Some may call her country, others say she’s pop. Regardless, Kacey Musgraves knows how to make her listeners feel seen. Her third album, “Deeper Well,” focuses on letting go during the ups and downs of life.
Musgraves’ music has a strong folk influence. Listening to the 42-minute album truly has the ability to transport listeners to the grassy field in which Musgraves appears solely on the album cover.
In the full release of the album, listeners are given songs that focus on the good and bad emotions that are present throughout relationships and the intensity of life. Musgraves’ spirituality shows in her lyrics and is the driving force behind most tracks on the record.
In “Deeper Well,” many songs appear similar with soft guitar sounds repeating the same rhythm throughout.
I enjoyed this because it gives the album a relaxing and vulnerable feeling. She has a softer tone on almost all of the songs, but “Cardinal” brings out a different side of her.
Although “Cardinal” sounds different, the lyrics focus on the spiritual meaning of seeing this bird in nature. Many of the other songs focus similarly on spiritual thinking, like “Jade Green,” which is about a crystal and its supernatural effects.
Along with themes of spirituality, the album has multiple songs about being in love.
A song in the album about romantic relationships is “Giver/Taker,” which focuses on the give and take dynamic between different types of lovers.
I feel I can relate most to the song “Deeper Well” because it focuses on the importance of making your happiness a priority. She really narrows in on getting rid of the negativity in your life, and I relate to that because it’s a very valuable skill to possess.
Through focusing on love, happiness and spirituality, listeners are left feeling introspective and connected to a deeper part of themselves.
