“10 Things I Hate About You” is a classic romantic comedy released in the late ‘90s. The film is filled with scenes that charmed me with their humor, heart and relatability. While the movie’s plot is predictable, the way the characters managed to make me feel connected to them causes this to be one of my favorite movies.
The plot, a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew,” follows two sisters, Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik) and Kat Stratford (Julia Stiles), both navigating high school relationships and their father’s unreasonable rules before ultimately discovering love.
The acting in this movie is entertaining, with Kat and Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger) as the main love interests. The two give a memorable performance with countless moments that made me laugh, like the scene with Kat sneaking Patrick out of detention by distracting the teacher.
The cinematography includes vibrant colors and dynamic camera angles that effectively capture energy and emotions. The film also uses many close-ups to really convey the characters’ passion.
The film provides both moments that can make you laugh, like when Patrick danced and sang for Kat in the stadium, and scenes that resonated with me emotionally, like when Kat reads her poem expressing her feelings toward Patrick to the class.
Ultimately, the film’s vibrant scenes, witty dialogue and brilliant execution of a classic storyline make “10 Things I Hate About You” a quintessential Valentine’s Day watch.
