This story was published Oct. 9, 1925. It was rereleased as part of the 100th anniversary edition of the Torch.
This first issue of The Torch marks the beginning of any journalistic undertaking in Bexley, and it is our dream to have it grow and spread until it becomes a real village newspaper and has its place in every Bexley home.
The members of the present staff are like so many pioneers, seeking out the paths and smoothing over the rough places, building the foundation for a newspaper which every student is going to love. In every issue we will aim to set forth the choice bits of high school and community life, to stimulate the blood of the school to a greater circulation, to acquaint the village with itself and with us and thus promote a keener interest in Bexley as a community.
All we ask is cooperation and help and if our readers are willing, together we can make The Torch serve us as the first newspapers served the fathers of our country for, opening as it is, on our untouched territory it has just as many possibilities.
It will promote competition for scholastic honors, for school offices; it will bring out talent never dreamed of; it will be a valuable experience for those connected with it.
But most important of all, The Torch will reach out into Bexley to make it realize that its heart is a real high school filled with busy happy girls and boys who are preparing themselves to carry on Bexley’s high standard.
