The city is working with Columbia Gas to replace existing steel gas lines in South Bexley with new plastic ones.
Pipes are being replaced on Euclaire Avenue, Cassingham Road, Montrose Avenue and Charles Street, Columbia Gas Senior Communications Specialist Amanda DePerro said.
Bexley City Engineer David Koch explained unlike the older steel lines, the plastic ones require less maintenance and improve the system’s safety.
DePerro said the plastic pipes are designed to resist corrosion and last longer.
“It’s time to replace the existing steel natural gas lines with newer materials,” she added.
NPL Construction Company, a contractor for Columbia Gas, is performing all on-site work with oversight from the city, DePerro said.
South Bexley resident Nancy Marshall said she wasn’t aware of the project until it began.
“I will feel more comfortable and safe knowing that we have safe gas lines,” she said.
The pipe replacement process consists of marking underground utilities, excavating and removing the old pipes, installing new polyethylene lines and pressure-testing the connections, Koch explained.
The project began the week of Sept. 15, according to the City of Bexley website.
DePerro said the project will be completed by the end of the year, and restoration of streets and lawns will continue into the spring.
Columbia Gas encourages residents to watch for construction and safety notices as the work continues, she added.
