As a rom-com connoisseur, “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” checks every box on my list: the film is filled with humor, iconic quotes and a beautiful storyline that truly captivated me.
The film follows Andie Anderson (Kate Hudson), a magazine writer who is writing a “How to…” column about how one should behave when they want their partner to initiate a breakup. At a bar, she meets Ben Barry (Matthew McConaughey), an advertising executive who bets his boss that he can make any girl fall in love with him in 10 days. The two independently test each other’s theories: Andie secretly tries to make Ben dump her while Ben tries his best to sweep her off her feet.
The climax of the movie happens at a work party on the 10th day of their relationship. Ben’s friends tell Andie about the bet and Andie’s boss brags to Ben about her “How to…” column. The couple fights over the deception before Ben famously says, “You wanted to lose a guy in 10 days? Congratulations, you did it. You just lost him.” The passion in this scene makes this film truly iconic.
While watching “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” I was never bored. Maybe it was because of Kate Hudson’s stellar acting, or maybe it was the fact that I couldn’t stop laughing. When Andie brings Ben a fern and tells him it’s their “love fern,” I kept giggling because of how outrageous that is.
With its romance, timeless quotes and brilliant storyline, “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” is the ultimate Valentine’s Day movie. The film delivered everything that the perfect rom-com should, leaving me full of happiness and hope.
