The maintenance staff took on several projects during winter break, including adding and remodeling walls, remodeling floors and stair treads, and performing maintenance on the heating and cooling systems.
Renovations took place in the Cassingham Complex as well as the Maryland and Montrose Elementary buildings.
In the high school, renovations included new flooring in the first floor arts wing and in classrooms as well as new stair treads and walls in the second floor arts wing.
Maintenance Office Manager Brett Santantonio explained the district’s buildings are 84 years old on average, meaning small projects are consistent and always necessary.
“All of our buildings are in constant need of upkeep,” he said.
Santantonio said contractors, custodial and maintenance teams started work Dec. 20 and finished Jan. 5.
He added his role was to oversee and coordinate the staff as well as help with the setup and teardown of projects.
One of the biggest challenges was repairing the roof at the Cassingham Complex, Santantonio said. He explained it was difficult to determine the locations of leaks and how to address them.
Santantonio added redoing flooring was more work than the crew had initially anticipated.
“Flooring is always a challenge,” he said. “You never know what you’re getting into until you remove the old floor.”
Santantonio said the short timeline was also difficult, but the crew focused on smaller, more pressing repairs to ensure everything would be completed according to schedule.
Overall, Santantonio said he was content with the repairs and thought everything went smoothly. He added he was thankful for everybody’s hard work.
“All of the tasks we set to accomplish were completed by the start of school and all appear to be done very well,” he said.
