The athletic department is undergoing shifts next year with the retirements of athletic director Eli Goldberger and athletic secretary Sharleen Stanley.
Stanley retired at the end of February. Goldberger will begin his retirement at the conclusion of this school year.
Goldberger has worked as the district’s athletic director for the last 10 years. Stanley has worked as the athletic secretary for the last 27 years.
The Board voted to approve Josh DeVoll as the new athletic director, starting Aug. 1, at their meeting Feb. 23. DeVoll previously served as the Granville Village Exempted Schools athletic director, according to an email sent to students.
Goldberger, who grew up in Bexley, said he started his career at the high school after previously working as an Athletic Director elsewhere. He said he learned of the job opportunity when visiting his parents.
“I was visiting home, and one of my friends sent me the position opening and that’s what I did, and 10 years later here I am,” he explained.
Stanley said she grew up in Bexley. She explained she decided to make a career change to athletics after spending 17 years in the public relations industry.
Stanley said her connections to the district have made her career fulfilling.
“As a student, parent and employee of the district, Bexley has been a huge part of my life and given me so much joy,” she said.
Goldberger said he has led major facilities improvements over the past several years as athletic director. Renovations like a revitalized track, wrestling mats and new tennis courts are some of his proudest accomplishments, he explained.
Goldberger’s time at the high school included an undefeated football season and many state appearances, he added.
Stanley said she enjoys attending athletic events with her family.
“Sitting on the bleachers with all the other team parents, watching my three sons and their teammates representing BHS in athletic competition ranks the highest and most cherished memories for me,” she said.
Goldberger said one of his favorite memories was two-time state champion Henry Lessard’s decision last season to play doubles with his brother Sam Lessard.
Stanley said she thinks student athletes gain a lot from their experiences.
“I truly believe playing sports in high school gives students a chance to build leadership skills, to learn what it means to be part of a team and most importantly to make lasting friendships,” she said.
Stanley said she anticipates staying engaged with the school in her retirement.
“I will continue to support Bexley athletics always,” she said.
Goldberger said he is looking forward to spending his retirement traveling and spending time with family and friends.
“I am excited about the new chapter and what I’m going to be doing,” he said.
