The baseball team has started the season with a winning record of 15-3, their best start to a season since 2015.
Among these games were standout wins against Columbus Academy, Grandview and Lakewood, which the team had not beat since 2013, senior and varsity captain Alec Redding said.
Playing with passion and having stronger bonds with their teammates, Redding said, have been the most important factors in the team’s impressive start.
“Whether it’s hitting, fielding or just being a good teammate, everybody’s doing their job and contributing,” he said.
Varsity assistant coach Wally Jacobs said he is happy with the team’s performance, and their hard work and positive culture are responsible for how the season has started. Even before the season officially began, Jacobs said, many players went to optional practices.
These optional practices happened twice a week, consisting of conditioning in the weight room and additional training based on players’ positions.
Jacobs added there have been important young players who stepped up this season in their first year on varsity.
Redding said there have also been essential team bonding experiences. Many people on the team have been playing together for years, he explained, contributing to the team’s closeness.
Shortly after the season started, the team went to Myrtle Beach over spring break. There, they were able to see the team’s full potential for the remainder of the season, Redding said.
Sophomore Andrew Montgomery said the trip helped build a lot of team chemistry.
Jacobs said he has noticed and greatly appreciated the team’s positive culture throughout the season. Their many inside jokes have gone a long way in creating team spirit, he explained.
Another crucial factor in the baseball team’s start to the season has been their persistent attitude and willingness to keep fighting, Jacobs said. In their April 15 win against Academy, he explained, there were multiple points during which the team was losing but fought to eventually get the victory.
“That was a huge moment to show our growth and what this team really can be,” he said.
Montgomery said the win against Academy was important because they were able to score six runs to take the lead in the final two innings.
“Last year, when we’re down, we were done,” he said. “This year, our energy has been a lot better.”
Redding said he is optimistic about the rest of the season but added their work leading up to the playoffs is not finished yet.
“I think we just keep playing the way we’re playing right now, and we can definitely finish off the season really nice,” he said.
