The boys soccer team’s season ended Oct. 22 after the team lost to Jonathan Alder in the second round of the Division II Ohio Boys Soccer tournament. They ended the regular season with a record of 11-2-4, placing second in the Central Buckeye League.
In the first round of the tournament, the team beat Bishop Hartley 2-0. However, they ended up losing to Jonathan Alder Oct. 22 after tying them 1-1 in overtime and then losing 6-7 in the penalty shootout.
Coach Jason Goggins said although he was disappointed in the result, he thinks the team had a very impressive performance.
“We believed we had a team put together to make a significant run, but other teams had the same idea and we were bested on the night,” Goggins said. “We were the better team on the field and showed the type of soccer we were capable of.”
Senior Captain Everett Tetzloff said he was disappointed the season ended as it did and was confident the team could’ve performed better.
“I just don’t think that we should’ve gone out like that,” Tetzloff explained. “Our team was definitely better than them, but we just couldn’t finish the job”.
Senior Wyatt Dillon said he wasn’t expecting a loss to Jonathan Alder.
“I think that our team assumed it wouldn’t be hard to win that game,” Dillon said. “We looked ahead to the later games instead of paying attention to our current one,” he explained.
Throughout the season, the team has had to fight through a variety of injuries, having various starters out, Tetzloff explained.
“It sucked to see some of the starters I play with have to be on the bench with injuries,” he said.
Even though the team struggled with injuries, they were still able to come out on top in many of their games, Goggins said. He explained that being able to win these tough matchups gives him confidence in the team for the next season.
“We were able to weather the storm and not lose since September,” Goggins said. “I am very impressed with how the boys handled the end of the season”.
With the season being over, there is a very lackluster feeling for the seniors, Tetzloff said. Tetzloff explained that he is preparing to move on from the season but will still miss playing with the boys.
“Soccer is one of the biggest parts of me,” Tetzloff said. “I’m ready for the next chapter of my life, but it will be weird without this soccer team being a part of it.”
Goggins said he is proud of the team even considering their postseason loss.
“It’s probably a coach’s way of saying this, but the entire team has stepped up,” he said.
