The girls swim team, which finished third in last year’s Division II state meet, is looking to make another postseason run.
The offseason consisted of new training styles and club practices for many swimmers, with this year’s team composed of both returning swimmers and a talented freshman group.
Coach Sandy Sliwowski said she has high expectations for the girls team. “We want to win the league again for a four-peat, and then hopefully we will continue that trend and take down some of the private schools at the state level,” she explained.
Coach Mitch Fries said he is confident the team will place within the top five at the Division II state tournament. He added he expects about 10 girls on the team will make it to states at the individual level.
Two swimmers who graduated last year committed to swim at Division I schools, Sliwowski said. Sophomore Katie Drummond, the DII 50 yard freestyle state champion last season, and seniors Hadley Langolf and Charlotte Holzhall are among those who will continue the program’s excellence, she added.
Langolf said she is happy with the team’s morale so far.
“I feel like the team has a positive energy,” she said. “Everyone is very close to each other, and the freshmen are fitting right into that.”
Langolf said the team continues to challenge each other.
“Once we get into the postseason, I think we all have that competitive edge,” she explained. “We all are competing against each other, which is a fun aspect of swimming.”
Drummond said the team’s strongest events this season are the 100 yard freestyle, 100 yard backstroke and 100 yard butterfly.
“Each person has their own group of events they are good at,” she added.
Fries said there are more swimmers competing this season, which increases the depth of talent on the team. This has brought great energy to the team and could contribute to future success in the postseason, he explained.
“The bottom end is much higher than it used to be, which challenges the top end to get better,” he said.
